Site specific installation proposal for the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria)
ON MARS is a speculative proposal that asks audiences to imagine life on another planet. In a place where architecture provides not only shelter, but determines our very survival, the installation is a multisensory experience that invites audiences to consider the colonisation of our solar system and experience the new Martian vernacular. Made with a rich palette of crushed terracotta, scaffold, mirrored acrylic and custom woven camouflage netting, this site-specific work draws audiences into a hypothetical martian terrain, to consider the themes of climate breakdown, exodus from Earth, the search for water, and the social and psychological implications of creating life in an inhospitable environment. With the growing climate emergency, the work invites reflection on the urgent need for action to preserve life on our planet, by presenting the extreme scenario that future generations must leave to survive - giving form to a possible consequence of climate change.
Will life on Earth one day resemble being ON MARS?
Or if we confront the climate crisis head on, can we preserve life as we know it?
